Sailing with Kids: We Made a Dream Come True on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast!

A sailing holiday… It sounds dreamy to most, but for families with young children, it often raises a few concerns:
“Will the kids be comfortable on board?”
“Is it safe for little ones?”
“Will we need to watch them constantly?”
These questions kept us from trying a sailing holiday for years. But once we did, we realized it wasn’t just a vacation—it was a truly unforgettable family experience. And to our surprise, it was much easier, simpler, and more magical than we ever imagined.

👣 First Step: Letting Go of Worries

Planning a family holiday always involves extra thought, and at first, staying on a boat seemed a bit daunting. But with the right boat and route, this kind of vacation actually feels tailor-made for kids.
Before we booked, we paid special attention to three things:
Spacious deck with shaded areas: We chose a gulet-style boat based on our agency’s recommendation, which provided wide and secure spaces for the kids to move around. We added a safety net around the deck rails, which brought us real peace of mind. Of course, we always kept an eye on the children—even though the crew was helpful, they naturally had their own responsibilities too.
Easy water access: We taught the kids how to use the side ladder (known as a süvari merdiveni) to get in and out of the sea safely. On some motor yachts or sailing boats, rear swim platforms make this even easier. But even with the side ladder, we had no trouble.
Experienced and kind crew: The calm, friendly, and child-loving crew made all the difference.

🌊 Adapting to the Rhythm of the Sea

As we drifted away from the shore on that first day, we watched excitement and curiosity light up in our children’s eyes. That first night sleeping under the stars became a memory straight out of a fairy tale.
Waking up to the gentle sounds of the sea, walking barefoot on deck, diving in after breakfast… This simple, slow-paced rhythm became a form of therapy for all of us.
Screens were forgotten. Tablets stayed tucked away as seashells were collected, fish were watched, and books were read on the deck.

🐠 A Floating Classroom for Little Explorers

Life on a boat isn’t just fun—it’s educational too. The captain’s compass, the stars above, the direction of the wind, ropes and knots…
Even for young children, this new world sparked endless questions and discoveries. On the day we traveled by sail instead of engine, our kids were beyond fascinated—and still talk about it.

☀ Waking Up in a New Bay Every Morning

One of the most magical parts of a sailing holiday is waking up in a new spot each day. Some mornings we found ourselves in quiet coves surrounded by olive trees; others by ancient ruins nestled at the water’s edge.
We followed the Hisarönü Gulf route, which was recommended by our agency. And just in case we wanted a little variety, we had the option to go ashore to explore charming Aegean towns, do a little shopping, or simply stretch our legs.
This region is a storybook in itself—but seen through children’s eyes, it becomes even more vivid and colorful.

💡 Tiny Tips That Made a Big Difference

Non-slip socks or water shoes: Help prevent slips and falls on board.
Sun protection: Hats, UV swimwear, and high-SPF sunscreen are must-haves.
Shaded areas: Especially important during midday hours so kids can play safely.
Simple toys: Water guns, colorful buckets, and goggles kept the fun going without taking up space.

💙 The Result: Memories That Grow With Us

Time on a boat is more than a holiday—it’s a chance to slow down, truly reconnect, and rediscover the rhythm of life together.
Like many parents, we were hesitant at first. But now, we find ourselves dreaming of the next trip as soon as one ends.
Our kids fell in love with the sea, the wind, and the open sky. And we fell in love with watching them discover, laugh, and grow.
So if you’ve read this far and you’re still undecided, let me say this:

👉 A sailing holiday with kids is not only possible—it might be the most joyful, freeing, and bonding experience you’ll ever have together.
Try it once. And who knows? For your children, the scent of summer might forever be tied to the salty breeze of the sea.
